Beach Rules

Dogs are allowed on Muir Beach on leash or off leash under voice and sight control. Big Lagoon, Redwood Creek and the Owl Trail are closed to pets, and dogs on Kaashi Way and the Coastal Trail must be leashed.

Beach fires are allowed at Muir Beach year round, but only in the park fire rings and only from 9am until one hour after sunset, when the fire must be out and the group must leave. Six rings are out May through November and three December through April. A group of 50 or more needs a permit.

A group of 50 or more people, or a group of any size bringing significant equipment such as tents or catering, counts as a special event and needs a park permit.

Drones may not be launched, landed or flown anywhere in Golden Gate National Recreation Area without written approval from the Regional Director. The nearest legal spot is the Shoreline Highway pullout past mile marker 7.0 north of the Muir Beach Overlook, and even that is closed to drones from February 1 through July 31.

Glass bottles and containers are banned park wide on every beach and within 15 feet of it.

Redwood Creek, including the Muir Beach lagoon and its tidewaters, is closed to fishing. The compendium does not close the open surf.
