La Jolla

Beach Rules

Dogs, drinks, fires and drones at this beach, answered for right now.

DogsNot right now

Treat La Jolla Cove itself as closed to dogs: the city's own Cove page lists No Dogs flatly, with no hours. The citywide rule, which the city has not reconciled with that, bans dogs from the beach, boardwalk and adjacent parks 9am to 4pm from November 1 through March 31 and 9am to 6pm from April 1 through October 31, and requires a leash at all other hours. Service animals are exempt.

Allowed again from 6 PM
AlcoholNot allowed

Alcohol is banned on the beach, cliffs, walkways, park areas and adjacent parking lots year round.

Fires & grillsDepends, by area

A fire must be inside a city fire pit or a container, never open on the sand, and no fire is allowed between midnight and 5am. The city lists no fire pits among La Jolla Cove's amenities, so there is no lawful place for one there.

GlassNot allowed

Glass containers are banned on the beach, cliffs, walkways, park areas and adjacent parking lots.

SmokingNot allowed

Smoking is banned on the beach, cliffs, walkways, park areas and adjacent parking lots.

FishingNot allowed

La Jolla Cove sits inside the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, where fishing, taking anything from the water and possessing game are all unlawful.

Amplified musicDepends, with a permit

Disturbing noise is banned on the beach, and any voice or music amplification needs a city permit.
